Make data readiness part of your S/4HANA transition

Source and target records linked by mappings, with reconciliation cards, an archive folder and an exception for review

Successful loading does not prove that the target data is ready for business use. Your team needs to know which records move, what is transformed, what stays accessible elsewhere and how balances and operational relationships will be checked.

We help define those decisions and their evidence before a production load. This page focuses on data migration work; the broader product and transition discussion remains in our SAP S/4HANA transformation hub.

Five workstreams for a controlled data transition

Each workstream connects technical tasks with a business owner and acceptance criteria. The target edition, release, selected transition approach and supported migration objects determine the practical tool and scope choices.

Source assessment & migration scope

Inventory source applications, data objects, volumes, dependencies and access constraints. Agree which master data, open transactions, balances and other supported objects are in scope, and define retention or archive access for information that will not move.

Mapping, cleansing & ownership

Document field mappings, value transformations, duplicate-handling and cleansing responsibilities. Business owners approve the meaning of target values and resolve quality exceptions; technical mappings alone do not authorize changes to business records.

Load design & supported tools

Evaluate supported migration objects and loading approaches for the actual S/4HANA environment. Define sequencing, prerequisites, validation rules and error handling. Use the selected tool only where its documented capabilities match the agreed scope.

Rehearsals & reconciliation

Run controlled test loads with representative data, review rejected records and repeat the agreed reconciliation checks. Compare scoped counts, balances, relationships and business outcomes, then record exceptions, corrections and retest evidence.

Cutover & migration handover

Define source-freeze decisions, final extraction and loading tasks, business checks and sign-off owners. Keep contingency decisions and source-data availability explicit. Hand over the migration record, remaining exceptions and support responsibilities after acceptance.

A migration record that supports business acceptance

The migration record should explain what moved, how it changed and why the business accepts the result. It includes scope decisions, mapping rules, load logs, reconciliation results and unresolved items rather than relying on a single successful-job status.

Confirm the transition path and tool boundaries

SAP documents the S/4HANA migration cockpit for business-data migration. Supported objects and approaches must be checked against the target edition and release; the tool is not a promise that every source record or historical transaction can be transferred.

Data migration for a new implementation is not the same as technical system conversion. Confirm the transition path, source and target compatibility, tools, authorizations and provider responsibilities before committing to execution. Software procurement, production conversion and unrelated interface development require separate scope.

From source inventory to accepted target data

Agree migration scope and acceptance criteria, resolve source-data issues, prepare mappings and load design, then rehearse and reconcile. Production cutover proceeds only through the agreed approvals, followed by documented acceptance and handover.

Validate business meaning as well as record counts

Acceptance criteria should reflect the actual business use of migrated data. Define tolerances, exception handling and approval roles up front. Record counts and load status are useful checks, but financial and operational owners need appropriate evidence for the data they accept.

SAP S/4HANA data migration FAQs

The answer depends on the target edition and release, supported migration objects, source data and selected transition approach. We agree the required master data, transactions, balances and dependencies, then verify supported loading options. We do not assume that every historical record can or should be transferred.

No. Data loading for a new implementation and technical conversion of an existing SAP system are different activities. A project may also need data remediation or other transition work. Confirm the chosen approach before selecting tools and planning the migration scope.

No universal coverage should be assumed. Check current documentation for the actual target environment, migration objects, prerequisites and supported approaches. Gaps may require a different supported method, additional scope or an agreed retention strategy.

Source-data and business owners approve cleansing rules, transformations and target meaning. The delivery team can help profile data, prepare mappings and execute agreed corrections, but ownership and approval are defined in the scope rather than inferred from technical access.

We agree checks such as scoped counts, balances, relationships, sample business transactions and exception handling. Rehearsals generate evidence for review and correction. Business owners approve the results for their areas; a successful load status alone does not establish acceptance.

No blanket guarantee is made. Cutover timing, freeze periods, contingency arrangements and acceptance depend on the systems and scope. We plan and rehearse the agreed tasks, make risks visible and preserve the approved source-access and recovery arrangements for the project.

Define your S/4HANA data migration plan

Share your source systems, target S/4HANA environment, priority data objects and main quality concerns. We can scope the assessment, owner responsibilities, rehearsals and acceptance evidence for a controlled migration plan.
